Epithelium Tissue
Epithelium Tissues

1. Simple Squamous Epithelium – Single layer of flattened cells.

Function – Allows passage of materials by diffusion and filtration in sites where protection is not important; Secretes lubricating substances in serosae.

Location – Air sacs of lungs; Kidney Tubules.

2. Simple Cuboidal Epithelium – Single layers of cube like cells.

    Function – Secretion and absorption.

Location – Kidney Tubules; Glands in the body.

3. Simple Columnar Epithelium – Single layer of tall column shaped cells.

Function – Absorption; secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substances; ciliated type propel mucus (or reproductive cells) by ciliary action.

    Location – Digestive Tract; Bronchi

4. Stratified Squamous Epithelium – Many layers of flat cells.

Function – Protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion.

Location – Epidermis; Orifices of the body.

5. Transitional Epithelium – Many layers of cells in transition (changing shape).

Function – Stretches readily and permits distention of urinary organ by contained urine.

Location – Urinary Bladder ; Ureters.
